A3 : Committee members go through a process of assessing pertinent information and concerns regarding issues addressed by the standard. The committee must reach “consensus” of opinion through a ballot and public review process before a voluntary standard may be published. Substantial agreement among committee members, rather than a simple majority of votes, is necessary. When a draft standard has been agreed upon, it is submitted for public review, and amended if necessary. Even after publication, standards are reviewed, updated and fine-tuned, in an effort to reflect the latest developments in safety and technology, as well as current realities of the marketplace.
